The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug (Review)

The Hobbit : The Desolation of Smaug was released to the theaters on December 2, 2013 .  The film was the second of the trio of films the book was made into . Although, the film covered a second portion of the book , it's accuracy wasn't exactly spot on.

Firstly , Orlando Bloom's character, Legolas the Elf prince, wasn't supposed to feature in the Lord of the Rings prequal. Legolas is to feature in only the series the Lord of the Rings. This unconventional addition to the script obviously has altered the script and annoyed some fans.

Secondly, The script added a completely new character that didn't exist prior to the film.  Tauriel , a ginger red headed female elf as been added to the Elve's defense crew. She is said to be young in Elv's standards as she is only 600.  Although she is seemingly just a fiesty guard elf with alot hunter prowess and mad archery skills, she has captured the attention of Prince Legolas .

Although she recognizes and  subtely returns his love , she is deeemed unfit for the prince to  consort with , by the Prince's father : King Thrandull.

However, Prince Legolas isn't the only one who seems intresteds in Tauriel.  Kili one of the thirteen dwarves assisted by Bilbo in resurrecting the dwarf kingdom has been smitten by ione of Cupid's arrows.  Although the reality of the cross race relationship seems impossible, it could be used as a forshadowing to the Elven and human relationship between Arwyn and Aaragan in the Lord of the Rings sequal.
Despite the taken liberties and script switch ups, Tauriel can be perceived as a nof to feminist ideologies and heroines alike as she is a highly skilled archerer in an era when women were expected to run and flee.  In addition to that the film does offer virtues about love and companionship that can endure long suffering.
The film has also ranked # 1 in 3903 theaters and racked up$73,695,197 on the opening weekend and $249,681,194 domestically as well as $843,681,194 worldwide.

  1. This isn't so much a review as it is a summation of what DoS was about. You didn't voice any out-right opinion about the film, or even Tauriel, who you spent much of the post talking about. Just by adding in what you liked or disliked about the film would have made this a solid review.
