Group Interpretation: Patch of Blue Review
On Thursday March 13 , all theater classes and a majority of the English classes went to see Ms. Stroemer's Group Interpretation cast , perform the group interpretation of the well renowned novel , and film ; A Patch of Blue. Group interpretations are more unique and differ from other play in that they are restricted to certain rules.
The number one rule is that they are not allowed to have scenery that suggests that they are at a certain setting.or in a certain era. In addition to restrictions on time and setting, the cast can't wear anything that suggests what era or place the story occurs. The third rule about the cast and their presentation is that the actors are required to use "off-stage focus". Off -stage focus is where theactors have to look parrell to eachother or look as two people woud look while in front of a mirror. The cast must also share lines as an ensemble and have to have their musicians out of sight. Above all the rules, the play must stay at exactly thirty minutes, no more or no less .
The play Patch of Blue , is centered around a blind young white woman( Selina) who falls for a good natured Samaritan , she encounters while working in the park. Unbeknowst to her, her night in shining armour( Gordon) is a blackman, which creates a societal cconflict due to the fact that they are living in the 60s. The play also explores things like social class and one's home environment . The element of Love is depicted in an unique instrument in the midst of a complicated scenerio and time of strife.
The actress Montanna Sandstom, an H-F Thespian who was the damsel in distress featured in last yar's Group Interpretation; Tyranny on Trial , played the meek and distressed Selina Darcy . Joshua Miller played the kind hearted and kindred soul; Gordon, who shows that true love overcomes fear of society's taboos, and will compell you to get involved in a situation people tell you to shy away from .
The ensemble definetly highlighted the wide range of non prop usage , when they used body percussion, audible noises or the instruments that were allowed , under the set. The script was intrecately written as the audience is emersed in the concept of love through different eyes, no pun intended. As a whole the execution of Patch of Blue was done unlike any way you'll ever see it in an a typical theater or even on film.
